Dampier to Karratha Power Line Upgrade

The Dampier to Karratha power line project brief describes an upgrade to Horizon Power’s 132 kV transmission link. The 19 km single-circuit line connects Dampier Substation (DMP) with Karratha Terminal (KRT).

Transmission upgrade scope

At the time of the brief, approximately 13.4 km of line infrastructure had reached the end of its service life. The remaining 5.6 km had already been replaced. Horizon Power proposed replacing the ageing section.

Communications cutover

The proposed installation included optical ground wire (OPGW). This provides a fibre communications path between the two sites. As a result, the project scope included a cutover from the existing microwave link.

• Transmission link: 19 km at 132 kV.
• Ageing infrastructure: approximately 13.4 km.
• Communications change: microwave to OPGW fibre.
