SCADA Isn’t Monitoring. It’s Your Grid Connection.

BESS SCADA integration is usually budgeted as a small package and left until the end of the project. On site, it sits directly on the critical path to grid connection testing. Reactive power control, voltage support and frequency response all run through it. When it isn’t ready, the whole project waits.

This is part three of the ACE BESS commissioning series from Australian Control Engineering. The first two parts looked inside the battery container at the battery management system. This part moves outside to the SCADA and control system, and to the grid itself.

Many people think of SCADA as monitoring only. On a grid-connected battery energy storage system, it does more than that. It is part of the control chain that lets the facility meet what the grid operator and the network service provider require. Active power control, reactive power control, voltage support and frequency response all run through the SCADA and control system layer. If the integration is wrong, the result is a grid compliance problem, and those problems stop projects.

We walk through a real example from grid connection testing. A battery facility had to show that it could change its reactive power control mode while staying online, for instance from voltage control to power factor control, with no trip and no disturbance to the network. The power conversion system supported it and the inverter manufacturer confirmed it. The function still had to be built into the SCADA and control system, including the mode transfer logic, setpoint handling, interlocks and sequencing, before hold-point testing could be passed.

The lesson for BESS commissioning is to treat SCADA as a compliance-critical scope from the start of design.
