Thousands of SCADA Points Decide Your BESS Schedule

SCADA point commissioning is the part of BESS commissioning that most often decides whether a battery storage project finishes on schedule. A utility-scale site has thousands of signals, and engineers must verify every one end to end. Factory acceptance testing catches errors early. OT network design and BESS integration decide how the rest goes.

Engineers trace each breaker status, temperature, alarm and setpoint from the field device to the network operator. The path runs through the RTUs, the PLCs and the communications network. Wrong points don’t announce themselves. Only testing finds them. When testing starts late, projects end up with weekend shifts and extra crews on short notice.

Plan the point database and the point-to-point testing strategy months earlier. Include factory acceptance testing (FAT) in that plan. FAT finds errors before equipment reaches site, when they are still quick to fix.

Underneath every signal sits the operational technology network. On many projects, vendors split OT network design between them. Each vendor handles their own package, and nobody owns the whole. When that network has faults, BMS data doesn’t arrive and the team can’t commission SCADA points. The operator can’t trust what they see. Engineer utility communications as one system, then document and test it.

This final part of the ACE BESS commissioning series ties the earlier episodes together. BESS integration involves the battery OEM, inverter OEM, BMS supplier, EPC, network service provider and grid operator. Each owns a piece, and the risk sits in the seams between them. The fix is to design the integration early and test before site.
