Nobody at Your Battery Is In Control

BESS SCADA control determines how a battery energy storage system responds to market dispatch, network requirements and local operating commands. Once a battery connects to the electricity network, the operator is no longer the only source of control. The BESS control system must determine which instruction takes priority and how the plant responds.

How BESS Control Systems Manage Conflicting Instructions

A BESS control system manages active power, reactive power and operating modes through defined control logic. Market dispatch can determine active power, while network requirements can affect reactive power, voltage or power factor.

This is where BESS SCADA control becomes critical. The SCADA system must route instructions correctly, apply interlocks and ensure the appropriate setpoint wins under each operating mode.

The HMI also needs to reflect these control boundaries. When remote dispatch is enabled, certain setpoints may need to be restricted so an operator cannot override an external instruction. The interface should make it clear who or what has control of each variable.

BESS Grid Integration Is More Than a Connection

BESS grid integration involves more than connecting the battery to the network. SCADA, PLC logic, communications, data calculations and external control requirements must operate as one system.

A BESS can also generate thousands of operational data points. Some values, such as efficiency and energy imported or exported, may need to be calculated continuously rather than taken directly from a device. The SCADA and EMS architecture must then deliver this information through the appropriate communications path.

BESS Commissioning and Control Testing

During BESS commissioning, the control philosophy needs to be demonstrated before site testing. Engineers should be able to show what happens when dispatch modes change, external setpoints are applied and control priorities shift.

The key question is simple: when the dispatch mode changes, which setpoint wins – and can your control engineer demonstrate that logic before you reach site?

At Australian Control Engineering (ACE), we design and integrate BESS SCADA control, control systems and grid integration solutions for batteries, renewables and critical infrastructure. Our approach connects control logic, communications and testing so commissioning becomes a demonstration of a defined system, rather than the point where unresolved control problems are discovered.
