A SCADA Configuration Gap That Made History

In 2021, a battery energy storage system (BESS), the Victoria Big Battery in Australia, caught fire. An investigation on this incident at the 450-megawatt-hour installation pointed to a surprisingly overlooked culprit: a SCADA configuration gap. When a battery unit was placed into offline mode during testing, the SCADA system stopped monitoring it completely. Telemetry went dark, cooling systems shut down, and operators received no alarms. A coolant leak escalated into thermal runaway with no intervention possible. Two battery containers were destroyed. The key corrective action is to ensure that SCADA monitors every unit, regardless of operational state. It is a reminder to start the SCADA conversation at the design stage, and not during commissioning.
