Many data centre projects focus heavily on the facility build. They overlook a critical question: who will design the data centre transmission SCADA interface?

It’s an easy point to miss. Teams often bundle SCADA into the broader controls and automation scope. They treat it as something to sort out later. But data centre SCADA is not just another controls package.

At the transmission connection point, SCADA must meet the network service provider’s (NSP) specific requirements. It must support protection schemes, revenue grade metering, and telemetry back to the network operator. It must also deliver secure communications and full operational visibility for both the site and the utility. Each NSP governs these functions through strict technical standards and approval processes.

When project teams treat data centre SCADA integration as just another line item, they increase project risk. Problems rarely surface early. They tend to appear during design reviews, FAT, SAT, commissioning, or energisation, when schedule pressure peaks and teams have little room to fix design gaps.

A successful data centre grid connection needs more than physical infrastructure. Engineers can build substations, switchgear, and cabling perfectly. But if the SCADA layer connecting the site to the transmission network doesn’t meet utility standards from the outset, it puts the whole connection at risk. The project also needs SCADA systems that meet NSP requirements and work reliably from day one.
