Time synchronisation is one of the least discussed elements of a data centre energy system, despite being central to almost every diagnostic capability the facility relies on. A consistent, accurate clock shared across the data centre SCADA platform underpins every alarm, protection event, and sequence-of-events record produced.
When the substation, the SCADA system, and the EMS each operate on a slightly different time base, establishing the true sequence of events becomes far harder. Since sequence is usually what reveals the root cause of a disturbance, this kind of misalignment can undermine the value of an otherwise solid data centre SCADA integration.
A properly distributed and verified time source allows a facility to reconstruct a disturbance with millisecond-level accuracy. Without it, the records that exist may simply be impossible to align with one another, leaving gaps in the story.
