Substation automation, the EMS, and generation control are operational technology. As a result, they come with security requirements that differ meaningfully from a standard IT environment. These systems are also becoming more connected, and in some cases remotely accessible. So the exposure shifts. It moves away from data theft and toward something more disruptive for a data centre: losing visibility or control over the systems that keep it energised.

It keeps the power-system network separated from the rest of the site. And it ensures logging and historian data stay protected and trustworthy.
